All Washed Up

I am already washed up, the seas having tossed me
this way and that
through nights blacker than deepest coal

Diamond stars have held their promise
The moon pulls and pushes at the morning creases
between water and land
Damp sand cushions my mythic crown

All around me – the companion tides
Spring and summer, winter, fall
Someone is waiting for me, not far from here

I am all washed up, having survived
the night storm
This must be the beginning of where I belong
I stand a bit taller and begin to wander

The village is calling, calling me home
