When It Happens

When it happens
the sentences will start themselves
melt into warm pools
where our skin can finally press together
When it happens
the sentences will end themselves, too

We will finally know the ending
We won’t be beginning
or ending
but wrapped in the unfolding story
spiral in great swaths
of deep color
we will be rich

When it happens
you will pour words
into my mouth
and I will pour words
into your mouth
and we will sit
in silence
write
apart
having learned to be calm
having learned to be patient
to stay still in a storm
that swept our houses clean

When it happens
the world will open its mouth too,
wider than we ever knew possible
And together
we will walk through that gaping hole,
not as old friends or new lovers
but something else completely –
electricity, alchemy –
a living sentence that says more
than any of our words ever will
