Medicine for the Falling Season

Tonight is all flickering flame
and a prayer to the waning moon
high above my children’s beds,
a head bowed in gratitude
for the strong medicine
I received today,
all four directions
answering the quiet call
for a longing I couldn’t name.

gentle deer
everyday spirals
a sunlit poem

Yes, it’s that falling time again,
and there is a loose geometry
in the brief chaos
of fluttering leaves,

and I wonder if the branches ache
or welcome their bareness,

if the sun knows how it blesses us
when it peeks through dark clouds,
illuminating nearly-November now,

if the breeze means to caress
with fifty golden hands
a slender spine,
all the while whispering,
take your time, take your time.

Here’s what I know,
in lieu of sleep.

This is the season
of loving abandon,
of leaving last year’s gardens
and taking only what we can carry
to a sky that darkens sooner
and a weak light that wakes
a listening heart,

and of falling down, down, down
to Persephone’s modest palace,
where lying fallow
is the dark womb
that will nourish
the beauty of her
unseen dreams.

With thanks to Maya Stein for this image, Denise for the deer, Latisha for the spirals, Kirsten for the poem, Terri for Persephone, Isabel for everything, and each of my soul sisters. You know who you are.

There’s so much here to love in these words…my particular favorites:

    “a loose geometry
    in the brief chaos
    of fluttering leaves”

“take your time, take your time”

    “this is the season
    of loving abandon”

    “a weak light that wakes
    a listening heart”

You manage to write so personally and yet gift us all with a mirror reflecting the surrender we’re so hungry for, a surrender to our own wisdom if we could just let ourselves believe it. Your journey undeniably inspires ours.
