Get On Top (You Have the Power)

Though it is colorless, shapeless, and sometimes weak, the human mind can become stronger than steel. To train the mind, you must exercise the patience and determination it takes to shape that steel.

— His Holiness the Dalai Lama

When some heavy weight is pressing down on your chest, pinning you down, making it hard to breathe, you have the power to turn that shit over.

When you have a stretch of quiet and solitude and the voices of judgment and self-criticism come rushing in, as if they heard you were house-sitting for the week and decided to come party at your peaceful retreat (without your invitation), you have the power to send them away.

When you hit up against the inevitable anti-climax after reaching a long sought-after goal, depletion masquerading as disappointment, you have the power to say, “I did it, and letting down does not diminish my accomplishment.”

When professions of undying love come on the heels of being called “damaged goods,” you have the power to name what is false–and to escort him or her to the door. Then close it for good.

When you wake up some days irritated and running late, prowling for something or someone to blame, you have the power to say, “I am irritated today,” rather than taking it out on the barista at Starbucks or your boss or your kid.

When you are tired, you have the power to close your eyes. When you are tweaked or triggered, you have the power to examine why.

When some heavy weight is pressing down on your chest, pinning you down, making it hard to breathe, you have the power to turn that shit over.

Get on top. Own it. Because, yes, you–we–are that powerful.

Yes. Yes!! :) And it is so awesome when you really do begin to do so (turn that shit over), with some level of proficiency. Three cheers for the power of a brave and open-eyed self relationship. I definitely needed this reminder when i came across this post today. Thanks.
